This week we welcome back fan-favorite veterinarian, Dr. Julie Towle, to give us the low-down on cancer in pets. One million dogs get cancer every year in the United States, and 50% of dogs over the age of 10 will die of cancer. Dr. Towle gives us the background on these sobering statistics and details some of the steps pet owners can take to reduce cancer risks for their pets.
Amy and Dr. B. join Dr. Towle to discuss the importance of physical exams as a first step in checking for cancer, the hundreds of types of cancer and how each behaves and is contracted differently, and important cancer deterrents to consider in the absence of blanket solutions. They discuss possible treatment options, the importance of pet insurance, and why pet cancer treatments are often focused more on improving quality of life than full cures. Dr. Towle also talks about steps pet owners can take to help reduce cancer risks, like food choices, vaccine etiquette, and exercise.
